ALLSPICE is native to Central America & the Caribbean. It can be used whole for stews and pickles, or ground for baking. It tastes of CLOVES, NUTMEG and CASSIA CINNAMON. It got its name in the 17th century, when allspice berries were first imported to Europe, since it is said to taste like a combination of the three spices mentioned. It is sometimes included in a five pepper mix, and was mistaken by Europeans as a peppercorn, because of its similar, round appearance, and which is why it is sometimes called Jamaican pepper.
SUGGESTED USES: It is used in sweets, pickles, stewed fruit, and of course in Jamaican JERK RUB. It is also found in Middle Eastern cooking and sausage making.
