Day 18 - Nigella Seeds
Some believe I was named after a chef, but alas no.
I get asked on the regular if these seeds are named after Nigella Lawson - the answer is no.
They are sometimes called Kalonji. They are often mislabeled as Black Onion Seeds, Black Caraway Seeds and Black Cumin. Nigella Seeds come from a plant called 'Love in The Mist' and have a nutty flavour with slight peppery notes. It is an essential ingredient in PANCH PHORA.
Nigella Seeds are often used in Indian Naan bread and Turkish breads. They go particularly well with potatoes and cauliflower. Lightly roasting the seeds will bring out their nuttiness.
